【武庫川女子大学】東京2020オリンピックに出場した本学体操部の杉原愛子選手が、西宮市長を表敬訪問しました。

東京2020オリンピックに出場し、体操女子団体で5位入賞を果たした体操部の杉原愛子選手（短期大学部健康・スポーツ学科2年）が9月1日、西宮市の石井登志郎市長を表敬訪問し、競技結果や大会を振り返っての思いなどを報告しました。

リオデジャネイロ大会に続く2大会連続の出場で、体操女子団体で5位入賞を果たした杉原選手は、「コロナ禍のなか、無観客の開催でしたが、オリンピックを開催していただいたことに感謝の気持ちでいっぱいでした。私自身、団体決勝では納得がゆく、自分らしい演技ができました。これまで支えてくださったたくさんの人たちに演技で恩返しをしたいと思っていたので、目標は達成できたと思っています。また、メダルまでは0.8というわずかの差で、日本チームが強くなっていることもアピールできたと思っています」と報告しました。

石井市長は、「オリンピックの開催が1年延期になり、その間、どのようにモチベーションを保たれたのか。今大会の無観客での開催やリオデジャネイロ大会との違いをどう感じられたのか。また、このような状況下で大会ができたことについて、西宮のすべての子どもたちにメッセージをいただきたい。杉原さんにはこれからの競技、その先の人生も頑張っていただきたい。西宮市は引き続き、応援させていただきます」で大会での活躍をたたえました。

杉原選手は、大会が1年延期になったことについて「大会延期をポジィティブにとらえ、しっかり身体を作り直して大会に臨むことができました」と振り返り、また、子どもたちへのメッセージとして、「このような状況での大会だったので、大会では、開催をしていただけることへの感謝の気持ちをさらに強くしました。子どもたちには、いつも感謝の気持ちを忘れず、自分の大好きなスポーツを楽しんでほしい」と話しました。

杉原選手は9月23日に全日本シニア体操競技選手権大会に出場予定です。

The gymnastic Olympian, whom with her team Japan members marked her place in the Olympics with the 5th in the charts paid a visit to the mayor of Nishinomiya city, Mayor Toshiro Ishii.  They reminisced Ms. Sugihara’s thoughts on the results and experiences of the competition.

Suhihara who won 5th place in the women’s gymnastics since her second consecutive tournament following the Rio de Janeiro Olympics commented “I am overwhelmed with gratitude over the fact that the Olympics were able to be held despite the pandemic at rise. Even without the cheer of the spectators, I feel I was able to perform to the best of my ability. I wanted to give back to those who helped and supported me along the way and through my performance, I believe I was able to do so. We were so close to a medal with only 0.8 points of a difference which just goes to show how much stronger we are becoming as a national team.”

Mayor Ishii, added “It couldn’t have been easy to maintain one’s motivation with the postponing of the tournament. We spoke of how big of a difference it was for her to compete without spectators unlike Rio de Janeiro tournament, and how she felt about it. I would like for all children in Nishinomiya to be given a message about the fact that the tournament was held under these circumstances. I’d like for Ms. Sugihara to do her best in her future competitions and in life, too. We, as city of Nishinomiya will continue to support her.”

Regarding the postponement of the Olympic Games, Ms. Sugihara recalled “I was able to take the news of the postponement, rather positively. I focused on rebuilding my body in preparation to face the tournament.” In reference to words of encouragement to children, she quoted “since the tournament had to be held under such circumstances, I was even more grateful to be a part of it. I want children to always remember to appreciate what they have and enjoy playing the sports they love.”

Ms. Sugihara is scheduled to compete in All Japan Senior Gymnastics Championships on September 23rd.
